KUCHING: The six Members of Parliament from Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will do well as federal deputy ministers, said political analyst Professor Lee Kuok Tiung.

The senior lecturer at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) predicted that all of them will do their best to take care of Sarawak’s interests.

He also singled out Sarikei MP Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii of the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), saying he deserves the opportunity as he is the only Chinese representative from GPS in federal government.

“Equally important is that there are women representatives from GPS too,” he said, pointing to Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib’s appointment as Economic Deputy Minister, in particular.

Meanwhile Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) director Dr Gregory Hii said Sarawak having six out of 27 deputy ministers, which accounts for more than 22 percent, is a good achievement.

“Including the five full ministers appointed earlier, we have 11 MPs holding various ministerial positions and portfolios, well done to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“All these appointments should bring about immense benefits to Sarawak in helping us to catch up with West Malaysia in terms of developments be they infrastructure, economic, urban and rural.”

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Friday announced the list of deputy ministers in Kuala Lumpur.

The MPs from Sarawak are Kota Samarahan MP Datuk Rubiah Wang (Rural and Regional Development Ministry), Limbang MP Datuk Hasbi Habibollah (Transport), Mukah MP Datuk Hanifah Taib (Economy), and Sibuti MP Lukanisman Awang Sauni (Health) all of whom are members of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (GPS-PBB).

Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii of GPS-SUPP will be the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change and Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong of the Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) was appointed Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.
