KUCHING: Sarawak will have an additional 23 Digital Economy Centres (PEDi) this year.

Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Teo Nie Ching said the ministry’s target for this year was to set up the 23 PEDi in the state.

“Currently, Sarawak has 133 PEDi, and it is our intention for 2023, that we are going to set up another 23 PEDI in Sarawak,” she said.

She said this to reporters after an official work visit to Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) Sarawak here today (Mar 19).

Teo added the PEDi would be built in the respective state constituencies which did not have such facilities.

“Some of the proposed areas are in the constituency that does not have any PEDi yet. There are also areas where the constituency already has a PEDi, but we would like to increase more of it,” she said.

She added that in the 2023 Budget, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has set a target where he wants each constituency to have at least one PEDI.

“With that, we hope to create another 23 more PEDI for Sarawak. And this is important, especially if we can teach people, particularly rural folks to utilise the internet so that they can actually be part of the digital economy.

“Having said that, it is also the aim of our ministry that by the year 2025, we would like to see the digital economy contribute 25.5 per cent to our Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“So, it is very essential for us to make sure that all the citizens can utilise the internet to not only transform their lives but also in business activities,” she pointed out.
