Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg

KUCHING: Silat has now become an international sport and is no longer the sport of the ‘orang kampung’ (villagers), said Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

The Premier said the Sarawak government will promote silat professionally so that it could be part of an internationally recognised sport.

“Silat has become part of the state government’s policy to help uplift the sport globally.

“Therefore, just like any other sport, silat will continue to be promoted here. For that, we will continue to work with silat associations to further train and churn out athletes who will compete internationally,” he said.

Abang Johari was officiating at the Sarawak Premier International Silat Championship 2023 at Stadium Perpaduan here yesterday (Feb 27).

Welcoming the participants from 11 countries, he reminded the athletes that whether they win or lose, the spirit of silat should be ingrained in them.

“To the silat exponents, do maintain the sport’s culture and practise professionally so that you can become an international champion.

“Let’s focus our attention on this sport that represents our culture. Hopefully through this championship, it can further strengthen our relationship with each other,” he said.

The championship, which will be held from Feb 27 to Mar 5, attracted 500 exponents from all over Malaysia, as well as from the United States, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Singapore and Brunei.

The 21 contingents will be competing for a prize money of US$20,000.
