CASCADING dams will be Sarawak’s new approach to develop hydropower potential, said Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi.

This new approach stands out for its sustainability, minimising environmental and social impacts. Unlike traditional methods that necessitate large reservoirs or inundate vast land areas, this approach relies on the natural flow of rivers, he said in his winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly.

Julaihi reiterated that the passing of the Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2023 last Tuesday opened up opportunities for Sarawak to develop its hydropower potential through cascading dams.

“The passing of this Bill also provides opportunities for private, public and local communities to participate through equity in the development of hydropower with Sarawak Energy if the local community wants the hydro project to be developed in the area,” he added.

The minister said local participation in developing the cascading dams depended on their willingness while Sarawak Energy would continue to take the lead to ensure grid stability, safety and security.

He said Sarawak Energy adopted International Hydropower Sustainability Standards in carrying out its projects in line with Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) policies.

Accordingly, the communities and local leaders would be engaged early in the project implementation and he hope there would be no interference by outsiders influencing the local community in the area.
