SANTUBONG: Hikers should always inform the park rangers before proceeding to climb Mount Santubong, said Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Abdul Karim, who is the minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, said by informing the park rangers, it could help with misfortunes such as going off-track or having health difficulties while hiking.

Abdul Karim, who is also the minister of Youth and Sports, added that the hiking trend is indeed a positive activity for taking care of one’s health.

“The trend also encourages youth, especially those who love nature, to play tourist in their own state and also attract more attention of other youth.

“However, one should make sure that they are fit and is in good shape before proceeding to hike up Mount Santubong,” he told reporters during a press conference after a site visit at Santubong Archaeological Park in Bongkissam and Bukit Maras, in the Salak Land district, today (September 1).

Abdul Karim stressed that individuals should understand and take note of their capabilities and health issues due to the challenging trails on Mount Santubong.

“Don’t push yourself when you couldn’t. Just because your friends are able to climb, doesn’t mean you should force yourself when you are not able to,” he said.

Meanwhile, Abdul Karim said that his ministry and Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) are planning to collaborate with Sarawak Forestry Corporation and the local councils.

“With the collaboration, we will be able to develop and prepare comfortable facilities for hikers and visitors from inside and outside the country.

“Not only that, we will also make sure that the facilities and trails are properly prepared and guided to avoid future mishaps,” he said.
