KUCHING: The establishment of the Sarawak Water Authority (SWA) is in the pipeline, says Dr Hazland Abang Hipni.

The Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability stated that the SWA would regulate the quality and volume of water in Sarawak.

“Previously, the quality of water was affected by logging activities and so on. This matter was mitigated during the late Pehin Sri Tan Sri Adenan Satem’s tenure (as Chief Minister) as the state ceased the issuance of logging licenses and the opening of new plantations.

“This was one of the most important strategies in increasing the volume and quality of water, he said.

Dr Hazland said this after witnessing the SIRIM Eco-Label Certificate handover to Weida Integrated Industries Sdn Bhd on Today (Oct 17).

Commenting on the International Water and Wastewater Exhibition and Conference (BIWWEC) 2022 held on Oct 17 to 19, he said it was a very good platform for various experts to convene and exchange views.

He pointed out that Sarawak is lucky to be blessed with various natural resources as this enabled the state to generate revenue.

“Sarawak has the (ideal) package – we are outside of the (Pacific) Ring of Fire, we have plenty of rain and sunshine as well as land and rivers.

“Moreover, we have a stable government led by visionary leadership. Not only can we assist in mitigating and combating climate change but we can also monetise our natural resources along the way,” he added.
