KUCHING: Recipients of assistance have been urged to help others in need whenever they can.
“Today is an example of how the former students of Sacred Heart are paying it forward. Many of those who contributed to the funds are from humble beginnings.
“After having left school and gone out to work, these former students have returned to the school to lend a helping hand to the underprivileged students,” said Senator Robert Lau Hui Yew.
Lau, who is also a former student of the school, said this during the disbursement of financial assistance from Knights of Sacred Heart School on Thursday (Aug 5).
He remarked that today’s students would one day become former Sacred Heart students, and he hoped that they would remember to return to the school and assist those in need.
“In the next few years, when you are able, I encourage all of you to pay it forward. Always remember to provide a helping hand to those in need and remember to pass it on to begin a compassion cycle.”
Lau also disclosed that when the Knights were asked to help, the mission quickly grew into an operation that would provide financial assistance to 244 students and teachers.
“A total of RM20,500 has been distributed to 49 secondary students, 66 elementary students, and 10 pre-schoolers so far and when school reopens, another RM32,150 has been set up for 119 secondary school students.
“Meanwhile the last remaining amount of RM35,300 will be used to provide case-by-case assistance to certain students.”
He mentioned that over the course of four days in July, the Knights of Sacred Heart had raised RM88,000.
Also present were Sacred Heart English Primary School headmaster Sylvastine Gelau, and Yong King Sung, Anthony Chan and Eddy Puah, who are Sacred Heart School Old Students Association president, vice-president and secretary respectively.
