KUCHING: Sarawak State Library will hold a Sarawakiana lecture series called ‘The Purpose and Meaning of Symbols in Mantras in the Punan Community Culture’ (Tujuan Dan Makna Simbol Dalam Mantera Dalam Budaya Masyarakat Punan).

Delivered by a lecturer from the Faculty of Language and Communication of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Zeckqualine Melai, it will take place at 9.30 am on March 20 in the state library’s Bilik Koleksi Khas.

The objective of the lecture is to discuss various aspects of mantras, which is one of the variations in the Punan language.

Mantras reflect the community’s thoughts on the roles and importance of mastering knowledge and appreciating the environment.

They are intellectual expressions that focus on the subtleties and beauty of language.

The lecture also focuses on the principle of symbols to examine the selection of words and their context in mantras as a reflection of the Punan community’s intellect.

Aimed to promote and preserve the cultural heritage of the Punan community in Sarawak, it will provide an opportunity for individuals to learn about and appreciate the culture and language of the Punan community.
