KUCHING: Scammers have hit the jackpot again with another criminally creative tactic to steal one’s money from their bank accounts, all within 24 hours.

Their latest scheme happened to a local housewife who lost RM21,400 in her fixed deposit, which had been transferred to four different accounts from Aug 10 to 11 this year.

Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen when met at Sekama police station, said this crime happened without the victim’s knowledge and authorisation.

“The victim realised that she was not able to access her bank account on Oct 24. She went down to the bank at Simpang Tiga to check and to her surprise, she found that the fixed deposit funds had been transferred out.

“It was found that the money amounting RM21,400, was transferred into her savings and later, transferred out to four different accounts via 12 transactions.

“This was her savings for years and now, it is gone,” he said after assisting the local woman in lodging the police report today.

It was told that the victim went to the bank to update her bank account in July and a month later, her money was gone.

He stated that there have been incidents where money from the savings and current accounts were transferred without authorisation.

However, this time, it is money in the fixed deposit that can be transferred out without the person’s knowledge.

Therefore, he urged the police to be more proactive and conduct investigations into scam cases.

“This is a crime because people are stealing their money right under their nose, through their bank accounts and they walk away scot free.

“So far, I have yet to see anyone get arrested for this (crime),” he said.

The incumbent Stampin MP hoped that the new government will take this matter seriously and put a stop to it as such cases has been rampant for the past year or two.
