KUCHING: The Kuching Water Board (KWB) has clarified the causes for the occasional discoloured water experienced by consumers in Kuching over the past few weeks.

The board said the discoloured water was caused by the scouring of sediments in the pipelines when it runs another group of pumps to mitigate the water supply shortfalls caused by the following activities:

  • Shut down of Plant 2 for eight hours on Aug 15 to repair a leaking valve.
  • Shut down of Module 8 Water Treatment Plant on Aug 24 for six hours to test the water tightness of valves during shutdown on Aug 27 for 16 hours and subsequently for three hours on Aug 29 to drain the clear water tank for the replacement of eight faulty valves.
  • Shut down of water supply along Jalan Datuk Mohammad Musa on Sept 2 for eight hours to facilitate pipe relocation due to the road widening works.

“We would like to apologise for the occasional discoloured water experienced by consumers in Kuching City over the past few weeks.

“The said group of pumps causing the scouring of sediments were stopped on Wednesday (Sept 7) morning as the water supply situation is back to normal,” it said in a press release.

The board assured that the discoloured water problem should dissipate over the next couple of days.

Consumers are advised to contact the board’s call centre at 082-222333 or send a message at 0198866650 should they face water quality problem.

“At the moment, we are actively doing the flushing exercise at the affect areas,” it added.
