In a move to replace the overcrowded old centre, a Digital Economic Centre (PEDi) will be established in the Semop constituency.

Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS), Datuk Abdullah Saidol announced that the site for the new PEDi is being identified. The centre will also function as an innovation hub upon completion.

He said that the construction of the new PEDi is vital to facilitate various activities and courses related to internet and application usage in the future.

“This PEDi centre is the only one on Pulau Bruit. I am also grateful to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for allocating RM200,000 to upgrade the existing facilities of the Digital Economic Centre in Kampung Semop.”

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Projects of Dreams Realised (PRO-DR) programme organised by Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak (TEGAS) recently, the Semop assemblyman mentioned that the programme aims to engage the youth, and TEGAS will continue to prioritise community collaboration.

“We will expand this event to various places in the state, and I hope programmes like this will raise awareness, especially among secondary school students, to prepare them for the challenges of the digital world when they enter higher education and the workforce.”

He also stressed the importance of providing the villagers with a basic understanding of the digital agenda components to ensure their inclusion in socioeconomic activities, including internet businesses.

Addressing another aspect, Abdullah noted the fertile marine resources of Pulau Bruit, suggesting its potential as Sarawak’s ‘Food Basket’ to support local food production promotion.

Meanwhile, MCMC Sarawak director Adiman Ajim mentioned the Sarawak government’s efforts in establishing communication towers throughout Sarawak, including 10 on Pulau Bruit.

“This initiative aims to further stimulate economic development in line with various infrastructure projects and port development plans, especially the Batang Paloh and Muara Lassa Bridge projects, Rural Growth Centres (RGC) Semop housing, and the development of the Tanjung Manis Port.”
