SERIAN: The annual Maulidur Rasul parade here once again demonstrated the spirit of unity and harmony that defines the constituency.

Serian MP Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem noted that though the event is religious in nature, it welcomed attendees from diverse backgrounds, including those of different faiths and beliefs.

As someone who is not of the Islamic faith, he expressed how profoundly meaningful it was for him to attend the event.

“This is the uniqueness of Sarawak. Unlike many other places, here in Sarawak, events organised by the Muslim community warmly welcome individuals of different faiths, such as us.

“We are truly thankful for the invitation,” he said when delivering his speech during the Serian Division Maulidur Rasul parade at Serian Convention Centre today (Sept 30).

The event brought together a diverse crowd of over 900 people, with participation from 29 contingents. Despite the rain, the festive atmosphere remained unwavering.

Riot emphasised the significance of upholding this culture of unity and harmony, referring to it as the foundation of a prosperous country.

While Sarawak is a varied state, he stated that its togetherness is steadfast.

Acknowledging the challenges posed by external forces attempting to sow discord through social media, Riot urged the community to stand strong against such attempts.

“Let us pledge to preserve our multicultural harmony. Unity among communities and among people is a shared responsibility.

“The achievements we gain through unity and harmony will be evident for all to see,” he added.

He pointed out the tangible results of this unity, such as the newly inaugurated Serian Convention Centre, a Type 3 health clinic set to operate before April 2024, and an upcoming Industrial Training Institute (ILP).

He attributed these developments to the strong unity within the Serian community.

During the event, Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus, and the Acting Resident of Serian Abdul Khalid Manap also present.

Meanwhile, the parade, featuring various agencies, departments, educational institutions, villages, mosques, and suraus, was further enlivened with a spirited banner competition and procession.

In addition to the cash prizes, the overall winners proudly claimed a trophy to commemorate their team’s success.
