SIBU: Overcoming initial trepidation in the face of formidable competition, talented Sibu violinist, Imran Azim Iskandar, harnessed his self-belief to secure the gold medal and earn the esteemed title of world champion in the classical category at the recent World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) held in Anaheim, California, the United States.

Imran attributed his victory not only to his personal determination but also to the unwavering support of his family, teachers, and friends.

In retrospect of the competition, he acknowledged the challenge posed by highly skilled participants from various nations, noting their professionalism and remarkable talents.

“Initially, I was intimidated by them, but once I stepped onto the stage and felt the confidence, I knew I could do this. I adapted to the stage environment. Overall, it was an incredible experience,” he shared when approached by the media upon his arrival at Sibu Airport on today (Aug 14).

Imran’s return was marked by a warm welcome from his family, friends, teachers, and Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek.

For aspiring individuals on a similar journey, the Form 5 student from SMK Bukit Assek stressed the importance of heeding parental guidance.

“All their decisions are for your benefit. Pursue what you’re passionate about because when you follow your passion, you not only enjoy it for yourself but also contribute positively to your country, family, and community.”

In addition to winning gold in the classical category, Imran also secured silver in the contemporary and original works categories, as well as a bronze in the jazz and open categories.

Meanwhile, Imran’s father, Iskandar Bujang, expressed his excitement over his son’s outstanding achievement.

“Considering the formidable competitors he faced, we can consider him an underdog. His accomplishment was truly unexpected. I’m thrilled and hopeful that he can serve as an inspiration to other young individuals in Sibu,” Iskandar commented.

Regarding Imran’s ability to balance training and education, Iskandar acknowledged the challenges.
“As a Form 5 student preparing for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia exams, his training time is quite limited. He can only practice on weekends, dedicating time to practice from 9pm to 9.30pm on weekdays.”

Despite these constraints, Iskandar trusts his son’s judgment, allowing him to determine the most suitable training and study schedule for himself.

“We don’t impose his study or training schedule on him. We leave it to him to decide when he can manage each.”
