KUCHING: Sarawak’s strong commitment to fight climate change while maintaining its role as the ‘lung of the world’ has attracted companies like Cyclect Group to develop the largest renewable energy data centre park in Kota Samarahan.

Cyclect Group managing director Melvin Tan said Sarawak’s favourable environment and resources make it an ideal location for data centres which play a crucial role in shaping the future by fuelling innovation and supporting artificial intelligence (AI) advancements.

The data centres in Sarawak will serve as the backbone of digital economy, storing, processing, and transmitting vast amounts of data for e-commerce, social media, cloud computing, and streaming.

Based in Singapore, the Cyclect Group is an 80-year-old family business in engineering, green power, and rescue recovery with engineering expertise to innovate, develop, build, and operate sustainable projects that meet the world’s changing needs.

“I was inspired by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s visions and how Sarawak is a leader in sustainability and social change. This made me become a passionate ambassador who highlights the state’s potential at every conference.

“I am captivated by Sarawak’s journey towards a green future. I eagerly anticipate collaborating with the state and making a difference,” he said at the Shape the World Summit 2023 gala dinner here last night (June 21).

Noting how data centres need a lot of resources such as land to build on, power to operate, cooling to prevent overheating, and connectivity to communicate, Tan said it makes sense to put them in a place like Kuching where land and reliable renewable energy sources are abundant and affordable.

“It also has a low population density that reduces energy demand and creates an efficient and resource-friendly setting. Kuching also has rich forests, biodiversity, and no natural disasters that offer a chance for data centres with low environmental impact and high operational stability. Kuching is the ideal location for data centres that are sustainable, resilient, and cost-effective,” he added.

At the same time, Tan said the group is excited to bring its expertise to Sarawak and empower young people with valuable skills in the efforts to build a sustainable future together.

“At Cyclect, our mission is clear: to lead in sustainable infrastructure for energy, manufacturing and data. Of course, there will be challenges and hurdles along the way.

“We need the support of the government, investors, customers, and partners. We are committed to delivering a world-class green data centre that is inclusive, sustainable, and financially viable. With TSG Group, we will make history and launch this ground-breaking project soon,” he added.
