Six nabbed for drug possession

KUCHING: Five men and a woman were arrested yesterday at about 9.30am at Kampung Melayu, Jalan Johari Sunchar, Bau for possession of drugs.

The arrestees, all unemployed, were caught by surprise when police raided a house.

Arrested were a 23-year-man from Kpg Raso, Lundu, an 18-year-old man from Taman Mutiara, Jalan Jambusan, a 32-year-old man from Kpg Melayu, Jalan Johari Sunchar, a 25-year-old man from Kpg Melayu, Jalan Johari Sunchar, a 29-year-old man from Jalan Mutiara, Jalan Jambusan and a 36-year-old woman from Kpg Melayu, Jalan Johari Sunchar, Bau.

Bau police chief DSP Poge anak Nyaon said found on three of them were a transparent plastic packet containing a crystalline substance, suspected to be syabu, with a gross weight of 0.33 grammes, two transparent plastic packets containing crystalline crystals, suspected to be syabu, with a gross weight of 0.75 grammes, one transparent plastic packet containing a crystalline substance, suspected to be syabu, with a gross weight of 0.64 grammes.

Poge said the three suspects found in possession of the drugs would be charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

If convicted, they can be jailed up to five years and fined RM100,000.

All six tested positive for drugs. They would be charged under Section 15 (1) (a) Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Under this Act, if convicted, they can be fined up to RM5000 or jailed up to two years.

Under the Survival Order, they can be jailed up to two years and under Section 38B of Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, up to three years.

Of the six, four have previous records of drugs while two including the woman do not have past records.

Poge called on members of the public to give information on drugs and assured them that their identities would be kept confidential.

He said he did not want to see more youths becoming addicted to drugs.
