Slight improvement in Sarawak students obtaining CGPA 4.00 perfect score

SIBU: Sarawak recorded a slight improvement in last year’s Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) exam with 147 candidates getting the perfect score of Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.00.

State Education director Datuk Dr Azhar Ahmad said this was an increase of 1.02 per cent when compared to only 95 (1.69 per cent) candidates obtaining similar results in the 2021 STPM exam.

“In addition, a total of 1,922 candidates or 35.42 per cent scored a CGPA of 3.0 and above,” he said when announcing the state’s STPM 2022 results at SMK Sacred Heart Sibu here today.

He added that the overall CGPA for Sarawak last year was 2.75, an increase of 0.04 per cent compared to a CGPA of only 2.71 in STPM 2021.

In fact, he said, last year’s CGPA is one of the best CGPAs in a decade since the STPM modular system was introduced.

For STPM 2022, 10 students have been picked as the best STPM candidates.

They are Chan Jia Wei (SMK Green Road), Alicia Tnay Ai Xian (SMK Green Road), Chung Yuan Li (SMK Batu Lintang), Chan Xia Tian (SMK Batu Lintang), Chai Jia Xin (SMK Green Road), Leena Chin (SMK Batu Lintang), Khiew Zhi Jie (SMK Green Road), Long Yan Ching (SMK Rosli Dhoby), Ling Kah How (SMK Meradong (A)) and Fiona Hon Man Chee (SMK Green Road).

“Two special needs student Sia Hui Xin of SMK Sacred Heart and Imenwell Isak of SMK Matang Jaya also recorded an outstanding result,” he said.

Azhar said a total of 5,581 candidates registered for the STPM exam last year, compared to 5,769 candidates in the 2021 STPM.

“Of the 5,581 candidates, 5,577 (99.93 per cent) were school candidates while the remaining 4 (0.07 per cent) were private candidates,” he said.

In total, all the school candidates successfully obtained the STPM certificate in 2022 compared to candidates 5,532 (99.8 per cent) in 2021.

Of the 5,577 school candidates, 23 (0.42 per cent) passed all five subjects, 3,887 (71.64 per cent) passed four subjects, 855 (15.76 per cent) passed three subjects and 394 (7.26 per cent) passed two subjects.

Meanwhile, a total of 205 candidates (3.78 per cent) passed at least one subject.

Azhar said 17 schools in Sarawak achieved excellent STPM results with a CGPA of over 3.00.

These schools are SMK Sacred Heart Sibu, SMK Chung Hua Sibu, SMK Bako Kuching, SMK Bandar Sibu, SMK Green Road Kuching, SMK Batu Lintang Kuching, SMK Saribas Betong, SMK Kampung Nangka Sibu, SMK Rosli Dhoby Sibu, SMK Petra Jaya Kuching, SMK St Thomas Kuching, SMK Durin Sibu, SMK Sungai Merah Sibu, SMK Pending Kuching, SMK Methodist Sibu, SMK Pusa Betong, dan SMK Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Gapor Kuching.
