KUCHING: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will temporarily stop receiving pigs from unlicensed pig farms starting on Wednesday (Jan 19).

It made the decision after the detection of African swine fever in Durin recently.

Its chairman Clarence Ting said that currently, in SMC abattoirs, 20 out of 100 pigs slaughtered were from unlicensed farms.

“This afternoon, our Public Health Committee discussed the recommendation by the Veterinary Department that the SMC abattoirs should not receive any pigs from unlicensed farms.

“After deliberating, we decided to temporarily stop receiving all pigs from unlicensed farms starting Jan 19,” he said in a Facebook post on Monday (Jan 17).

He added that the Veterinary Department would also conduct a meeting with farmers from licensed and unlicensed farms.

“In light of the coming festive season, the SMC also proposed to ask the Veterinary Department to check the health of pigs at unlicensed farms so that they can be sold during this CNY.

“We ask the cooperation of everyone involved and only through proper control can we stop this disease from overwhelming our pig farming industry,” he said.

The SMC, he said, was committed to ensure the pigs slaughtered at the abattoir were safe for consumption.
