GEDONG: The Sarawak government will develop new infrastructure that will change the landscape of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Gedong.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the school is in need of two new building blocks to replace the old and dilapidated ones.

“The principal has mentioned it, and almost every block needs improvement. Therefore, we will build new infrastructure for this school.

“Datuk Naroden Majais (the special representative of the Premier in Gedong) and I will ask the state Education Department to appoint a consultant with a design that focuses on functional buildings and not with designs that could overbill,” he said.

He said this in his speech during the closing ceremony of the EMART Leadership Youth Camp at SMK Gedong here today (July 23).

He added that the state government will make an effort to allocate a special allocation for the school.

“From what Naroden and I observed, we need at least RM15 million to construct the two blocks and their landscape, which will look like we are building a new school,” he said, stressing that another school in need of attention is Sekolah Kebangsaan Sageng in Simunjan.

Abang Johari said that he had already requested further details and a cost list for the construction of SMK Gedong’s new infrastructure from the state Education Department.

“However, I have not received any details until today. I need the details as soon as possible so that I can list it in my budget,” he pointed out.

Meanwhile, on another matter, Abang Johari urged the federal Ministry of Education to walk the talk on providing allocations and building new infrastructure for dilapidated schools in the state.

“We have been waiting for them, but yet no allocations have been provided. That is why I feel slightly angry with them. Education is important; not that I want to scold the federal government, but when you talk about it, do walk the talk,” he stressed.
