SIBU: SMK Kampung Nangka here emerged champions in the state-level Maggi cooking competition for secondary schools held at SMK Bukit Lima.

SMK Tiong Hua and SMK Bandar Sibu placed second and third respectively yesterday.

The schools battled for the right to represent Sarawak at the national-level competition.

Introduced in 1997, the competition was created with the aim of nurturing the passion of cooking among secondary school students as well as raise awareness about the importance of nutritious food and a balanced diet.

Since then, this annual event has seen over 10,000 schools and nearly 34,000 students from across Malaysia competing.

A total of 10 teams of students aged between 13 and 15 competed in the state final, namely SMK Merbau, SMK Kampung Nangka, SMK Bintulu, SMK Spaoh, SMK St Anthony Sarikei, SMK Bandar Sibu, SMK Tong Hua, SMK Methodist Sibu, SMK Kapit No. 2, and SMK Tinggi Sarikei.

“In line with Maggi’s aspiration to foster wholesome cooking at home with the family, we are very impressed with the turnout and level of skills so far.

“With the new concepts we have implemented in this year’s edition, we look forward to being surprised by the students’ level of creativity and inventiveness as they produce dishes that are not only flavourful but nutritious, well balanced and make full use of the flavours of Nestle and Maggi products,” said Maggi marketing manager Kimberly Oh.
