KUCHING: Newly-formed Sarawak Hearing and Aural Rehabilitation Society (Sarawak HEAR) will be holding an Ear, Nose, Throat Screening and Health Carnival here on June 12.

It will be launched at 10 am at Farley Mall.

Its president Dr Tang Ing Ping said the society is devoted to supporting the hearing-impaired and their families who use verbal communication as their main communication mode.

“It is dedicated to work collaboratively with various organisations including government and non-government bodies to raise awareness and help these hearing-impaired people to be able to hear and communicate verbally,” he said.

Ing said in the past, there were a few fund-raising activities in Sarawak which helped young children who were unable to benefit from hearing aids to undergo cochlear implant surgery individually.

“However, these families still have other challenges such as accessibility to fine tuning services or aural rehabilitation services, device maintenance support, education support and so on.

“Hence, Sarawak HEAR aims to support and help these cochlear implantees holistically,” he added.

“Various activities such as donation drive, hearing health charity clinical work, community awareness campaign were carried out in the last few months,” said Ing.

Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is the patron of the society.

Its advisers are Deputy Premier Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, Minister of Women, Early Childhood and Community Well-being Development Datuk Fatimah Abdullah and former Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan.
