SIBU: A soldier was yesterday charged in the Sessions Court with having 55 pieces of fake currency notes equivalent to RM4,000 last week.

Abdul Shahmi Shafiq Abdul Rahman, 29, from Kampung Masjid Lama, Belawai, was charged with committing the offence at Maybank Jalan Kampung Nyabor here at 9.46pm on Feb 12.

He was charged under Section 489C of the Penal Code which provides for a jail sentence of up to 10 years upon conviction.

The charge was read out to him before Lower Courts assistant registrar Romie Ahmad Zaidi but no plea was recorded.

The court set Feb 26 for mention of the case and allowed Abdul Shahmi  Shafiq  bail of  RM2,000 in two sureties.

It was reported that the man had printed the counterfeit notes to cover the cost of his wedding.

However, the act was uncovered when he lodged a police report claiming to receive the fake money from an ATM machine here. – Bernama
