KUCHING: Five special needs students from the Creative Sewing Course (KJK) at Kolej Komuniti Kuching recently joined the Creative Sewing Basic Strengthening Programme alongside 21 students from the Fashion and Clothing Course (SFP) at the Kuching Apple Craft Training Centre.

KJK head Siti Nur Aishah Lukman emphasised a student-centred approach, providing special needs students with opportunities to shine in various craft aspects.

“Even though these special needs students are considered slow learners and are often forgotten or neglected in our education system, the reality shows that they also have incredible creative potential with appropriate guidance from dedicated educators.

“The programme held today aims to exploit the creative potential of special needs students through the activity of sewing craft tote bags.

“Tote bags are an ideal medium to stimulate their creativity, involving the design process, colour selection, and sewing techniques,” she said in a statement.

She added that the programme has a second goal, which is to encourage positive interaction between special needs students and their peers from the SFP programme.
