SIBU: Teachers need to come together as a union to fight for the rights and well-being of both the teachers and the students.

Stating this, Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Michael Tiang Ming Tee said Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) has been a strong voice for educators and advocate for fair pay, job security, and opportunities for professional growth of teachers.

“In a world that sometimes forgets about the importance of teachers’ union, we believe that teachers are the key to progress. We know that teachers’ union is crucial for a thriving society,” he said when officiating at the opening ceremony of the STU Sibu Division Delegates’ Seminar 2023 held at Laila Taib College here yesterday.

Tiang was represented by Penghulu Ting Tien Huat who read out his text of speech.

The Pelawan assemblyman said STU represents solidarity and empowers teachers to achieve great things together.

“It reminds that they are not alone in the quest for excellent education,” he said, adding that by joining forces and supporting each other, they could overcome any challenge coming their way.

He said STU must continue to fight for teachers’ welfare, teaching burden and access to resources that help teachers to provide the best education possible.

“Teaching is not just a job; it is a calling to inspire, empower and guide the next generation. Teachers have the privilege of molding future leaders, innovators, and people who will make a difference in society,” he added.

However, he said teachers had also faced challenges along the way, as they had to deal with limited resources, overcrowded paperworks, and ever-changing educational policies.

“Teaching is a demanding profession. Teachers face long hours, heavy workloads, and emotional challenges. It can be easy to become consumed by your responsibilities and neglect your own needs.

“So, I encourage teachers to prioritise self-care. Take the time to rest, relax, and recharge. Engage in activities that bring you joy and help you unwind.

“Today, I am amazed by your dedication, resilience, and passion for teaching. Together, teachers are a powerful force, capable of shaping the world one student at a time. Let us continue to inspire, empower, and ignite the love for knowledge in the hearts and minds of our educators.

“Thank you for the hard work and for being the guiding lights of education in our society,” Tiang added.

Earlier, chairman of STU’s Sibu Division, Yong Sie Hing expressed his profound gratitude to Tiang for being a source of its funds from his contribution.

According to him, Tiang donated RM10,000 to STU Sibu in August last year and this has become a source of funds to hold its academic Incentive for the children of members the following month.

“Not only this, he also agreed to give a special funeral contribution of RM1,000 to all STU Sibu members and until today, a total of six next of kin of STU members have received this benefit,” Yong stated.
