KUCHING: Annual sports events are crucial in learning experience as they teach students good values.

Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap said students who compete in sports learn to get the results they want which require discipline, perseverance and commitment to train hard.

Yap advised students to take part in annual sports events, as it stresses on teamwork and strategies which are all critical to develop winning attitudes that encourage them to excel regardless of the challenges and obstacles.

“A sense of accomplishment often engulfs the student who exerts effort and energy and proceeds to do his best even if he does not win a prize.

“And this helps to build strong positive character traits which equips and molds our youth to become a vibrant force and human capital contributing towards the progress and development of Sarawak,” he said in a statement yesterday (Oct 20).

Yap was officiating at the ‘Annual Sports Day 2023’ of SJK(C) Sam Hap Hin, Mile 7, at the invitation of the school’s board held at Padawan Sports Stadium yesterday (Oct 20).

Meanwhile, during the event, Yap informed that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government is working towards providing free tertiary education at universities and higher education institutions owned by the state government for all Sarawakian students by 2026.

“The focus on free tertiary education is to ensure that more Sarawakians are qualified and knowledgeable to take advantage of the latest technology to drive Sarawak’s progress towards developed status.

“This initiative is made possible due to the able leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg whereby the Sarawak economy has expanded and increased every year since 2020,” he said.

Yap has urged his constituents to continue giving their strongest support to the Premier which is vital in order to ensure the Kota Sentosa constituency will progress and develop at a faster pace.

At the event, a minor rural project (MRP) grant of RM10,000 was also handed over by Yap to the ‘Persatuan Guru-Guru Sekolah Rendah Aliran Bahasa Cina Bahagian Kuching Samarahan’.
