KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is actively conducting spot checks on business operators to ensure their premises comply with the standard operating procedure (SOP).

Speaking to the press after checking several premises in Jalan Padungan here early yesterday, Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said, “Today’s special check is to see how things are moving at business premises, according to the SOP.”

Expressing his concern about the emergence of a new cluster in the city, he stressed that MBKS would take all precautionary measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

“We need to move faster than the virus,” he said.

“So once again, I appeal to the public, please, we have a duty to protect our family and to protect ourselves. So let’s work together.

“Because what’s more worrying is that we’re seeing a lot of people appealing for licence to start business. I think we have to make it clear, it’s not that we are not willing to let them do business.

“But looking at the situation now, it is a bit worrying and we’re trying not to make everyone panic,” Wee added.

“We would like to urge the public, business operators and the community as whole, to cooperate and work together to fight Covid-19.

“Fighting this pandemic is not only the authorities’ responsibility, but it is also everyone’s.

He also advised the public not to share fake news and spread rumours.

“Don’t use social media to spreading rumours and fake news, as this will cause panic among the community.

“Instead of spreading rumours, we should encourage people to follow and comply with the SOP,” he added.
