SSD hopes to raise RM300,000 from charity food fair

KUCHING: The Sarawak Society for the Deaf (SSD) will be organising its Charity Food Fair 2024 on April 7 (Sunday) in conjunction with its 40th anniversary.

The charity food fair will be held at the vicinity of the Association of Churches in Sarawak, Jalan Stampin here starting at 8.00am until 12.30pm.

In its press statement, the SSD aim to raise RM300,000 for its fund to support the society’s daily operation costs and various projects to uplift the lives of Sarawakian deaf community.

“The SSD Charity Food Fair 2024 objective is to support key projects and initiatives through your generous donations. These projects include the expansion of Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia (BIM) classes to raise awareness and facilitate interaction between deaf and hearing individuals.”

It said the fund would also contribute to the continued operation of the successful Brews & Bites Café, which was established from the proceeds of the 2023 food fair.

“The establishment of an Early Intervention Community programme will provide support to parents with deaf children, while the Deaf Video Broadcasting Project will create and broadcast content tailored to the needs of the deaf community.”

“Furthermore, the donation will aid in building better facilities to serve the needs of the Sarawak deaf community and the public,” it said in the press release.

The SSD Charity Food Fair 2024 promises engaging opportunities for interaction and community building. The public will have the chance to engage with deaf stall owners while enjoying the food fair.

A special video presentation showcasing SSD’s achievements and the impact of their work will also be aired.

To support the SSD’s charity drive, individuals have the options to setting up a stall, making cash donations, donating goods or participating in coupon booklet sales.

For the record, there are four deaf BIM teachers who are actively sharing their experience, providing insights into the Sarawakian deaf community and the use of BIM or Malaysian Sign Language.
