State gets honour to host global water congress

SEBUYAU: Sarawak will hold discussions from time to time as it prepares to host the International Water Association (IWA) World Water Congress and Exhibition in 2028.

Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Julaihi Narawi said it will take place at the Borneo Kuching Convention Centre 2 (BCCK 2)  which is expected to be completed in 2027.

“This is the first time that Sarawak, Malaysia and Asean has been chosen to host the IWA.

“It is also a big event involving about 10,000 participants from all over the world,” he told a press conference after the Program Santuni Rakyat at SK Haji Bujang Sebangan, which was officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Sunday (Sept 17).

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg had at the national-level Malaysia Day 2023 celebration on Sept 16, announced that Sarawak has been chosen to host IWA 2028, which he described as a significant milestone all Malaysians can be proud of.

The bidding ceremony was held in Bordeaux, France on Sept 14  by three speakers namely the President of Malaysia Water Association (MWA) Dr Ir Mohammad Asari Daud; MWA Sarawak Branch Chairman Kelvin Kuek; and Council Member of the Malaysian Water Association Dr Norhayati Abdullah.

The delegation of the bid mission was led by Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi alongside MWA.

It is also supported by the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Sarawak Business Events, Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau together with various water industry partners.
