State sees big spike in new cases today

KUCHING: Sarawak recorded 472 new Covid-19 positive cases today (Tuesday), a sharp increase of 237 cases from Monday’s 235 cases.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) revealed that 168 cases were detainees at the Miri Central Prison and two immigration detainees in the Sri Aman district.

The Miri district accounted for 178 new cases; Kuching 138 cases; Tebedu 50 cases; Samarahan 19 cases; Serian 17 cases and Bau 14 cases.

Nine cases each were recorded in Sibu, Sarikei and Kapit  while Mukah had eight new cases, Song four cases, Sri Aman and Meradong three cases each and  Bintulu, Lundu and Selangau two cases each.

The districts of Asajaya, Subis, Telang Usan, Tatau and Sebauh recorded one case each respectively.

“Of the total, 193 cases were individuals who had close contacts with Covid-19 positive cases, 232 cases were individuals in existing clusters and 28 cases were from screenings of symptomatic individuals at health facilities.

“There were 18 cases from other screenings at health facilities and one Import B case of individual returning from other states in Malaysia, namely Kuala Lumpur,”   said the SDMC.

The committee disclosed that there were two deaths in the state.

The 434th death was a 58-year-old local woman from the Sibu district who was confirmed Covid-19 positive on June 29.

She had high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic kidney disease and heart disease and passed away in the Sibu Hospital.

The 435th death involved a 57-year-old local man from the Kanowit district who was confirmed Covid-19 positive on July 5.

He had chronic kidney disease and gout and passed away in the Sibu Hospital.

The SDMC said there were 1,026 new recoveries and discharges from hospitals and low-risk treatment centres (PKRCs) statewide.

Of the total, 321 were from the Bintulu Hospital and its PKRC; 192 from the Sibu Hospital and its PKRC; 155 from the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and its PKRC   as well as 144 from the Kapit Hospital and its PKRC.

The Miri Hospital and its PKRC accounted for 60 new cases; the Sarikei Hospital and its PKRC 58 cases; PKRC Betong 44 cases; the Sri Aman Hospital and PKRC Sri Aman 25 cases; PKRC Mukah 22 cases; PKRC Serian four cases and PKRC Lawas one case.

These bring the total number of recovered and discharged cases so far to 60,573 or 87.06 percent.

There are 8,408 individuals still being treated at PKRCs and isolation wards in the state.
