KUCHING: Sarawak has long realised that empowering youths can only be through education, which is why affirmative steps have been taken to prepare its youths with future expectations.

The state believes that education is the best tool to success, for the future of Sarawak and the future of the country, says Petra Jaya MP Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

He said this on Tuesday in response to a message from DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang to Sarawakian youths to spearhead efforts to fight racism and extremism, corruption and build a country that would be a showcase of coexistence between different communities.

Kit Siang’s message was addressed to youths who would be taking part for the first time in the state elections, following amendments to the minimum voting age earlier this year.

According to Fadillah, the GPS-led state government engaged and built the capacity of student leadership, and empowered them to be part of the formation of policies.

“One can see this clearly in the fact that Sarawak is the first state to introduce the teaching of Maths and Science in English, starting next year,” he added.

“The existing education system is ineffective; it failed to prepare youths for life and unlock growth in the economy by preparing young people for the job market.”

The former Works Minister said basically there were three underlying factors to generate the power of youths.

“They are smart growth based on knowledge and innovation; sustainable growth for a more efficient, greener and competitive economy and; inclusive growth capable of delivering employment, social and territorial cohesion.”
