Statewide crackdown on traffic offenders during Gawai

KUCHING: The statewide Ops Gawai 2023 launched by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) resulted in 430 summonses being issued for various traffic offences.

Among the common offences were driving without valid licences and failure to buckle up.  

JPJ launched the one-week operations throughout Sarawak from May 29 to June 4 to ensure road safety during the festive seasonwhich saw comprehensive inspections of 4,760 vehicles.

“During the operations, JPJ officers were vigilant in identifying traffic violations and enforcing the law.

“Offences that were commonly detected included failure to wear seatbelts, dangerous overtaking on double lines, driving without valid licences and unauthorised vehicle modifications.

“Ops Gawai 2023, which took place from May 29 to June 4, involved the participation of all branches of JPJ Sarawak. The aim was to ensure strict compliance with traffic laws and regulations, as well as promote a safe and secure environment for all road users,” JPJ said on its social media platform today.

Meanwhile, the department reminded road users to prioritise safety by adhering to traffic regulations.

“It is crucial to wear seatbelts, respect speed limits, possess valid driving licences, and avoid any modifications that may compromise the integrity of vehicles.

“JPJ will continue to enforce focused enforcement measures to ensure compliance with existing rules and regulations.”

“It is essential to provide accurate details of the complainant and the incident to facilitate proper investigation and action,” the department said.
