OTTAWA: A small submarine carrying tourists to a legendary wreckage – the Titanic – has gone missing off the east coast of Canada, local media reported Monday, reported Xinhua.

The submarine was reported missing after it was overdue by a couple of hours Sunday evening 370 km off the coast of Newfoundland in the east of Canada, according to media reports.

It is not clear how many people were on board and rescue operation is currently underway, the reports said.

Although the expedition departed from Canada, the Titanic wreck lies within the jurisdiction of the US Coast Guard’s Boston fleet.

The trip to the Titanic was run by OceanGate Expeditions, a US-based company. It uses a five-person submersible named Titan to reach the wreckage 3,800 m below the surface.

OceanGate’s website advertises a seven-night voyage to the Titanic for US$250,000 per person with the money raised by tourists going towards Titanic research, local media reported. – BERNAMA-XINHUA
