KUCHING: Kolej Sunway Kuching is currently accepting enrolment for the September 2017 intake of its CAT programme.

According to the college’s CEO, Joseph Lim, this upcoming CAT intake is the last one for the year.

“The September intake represents the last chance for students to take up CAT in 2017 instead of waiting until January, 2018.

“If students want to have a fast track career in accountancy, I urge them to enroll now,” he said.

Kolej Sunway Kuching is the largest provider of accounting courses in East Malaysia. Over the years, it has achieved wide acclaim as the leading centre for a number of professional and vocational accountancy courses, including ACCA and CAT. The college is the first and only tuition provider in East Malaysia to be awarded the Platinum Approved Learning Partner Status by the ACCA.

“Platinum is the highest level of approval granted by ACCA to learning providers, bestowed only to those tuition providers that ACCA is confident to recommend to students.

“This prestigious ranking is achieved upon meeting stringent performance indicators such as pass rates which surpass those of the world, effective management and relevant support services,” said Lim.

Since achieving Platinum in 2010, Kolej Sunway Kuching has successfully sustained this elite status for the last seven years, over fourteen consecutive examination sittings. The college is the largest producer of ACCA affiliates and CAT finalists in East Malaysia and has produced more World and Malaysian prize-winners than any other institution in East Malaysia.

“We have a track record that we are truly proud of. As at 18 January 2017, Kolej Sunway Kuching has nurtured a total of 386 ACCA affiliates, 96 OBU graduates, 819 CAT finalists, 8 CAT World Prize Winners and 22 ACCA and CAT Malaysian Prize Winners,” Lim said.

CAT is a nine-paper, technician level qualification designed by ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to accountancy. The course can be completed within 12 to 18 months of full-time study and is recognised by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) as equivalent to a diploma.

Upon completing CAT, students receive exemption from the three (3) papers (Knowledge Module) at the Fundamentals Level of ACCA.

“This means the students only have to complete a further 11 papers to graduate as an ACCA Affiliate,” said Lim.

ACCA is an internationally recognized professional accountancy qualification from the United Kingdom that is equivalent to a Masters Degree in Accountancy.

Armed with this qualification and three years of relevant working experience, graduates will be recognized by the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) and will be able to practice as qualified chartered accountants.

According to Lim, unlike foreign accounting degree holders (e.g. from countries like the UK, US, Australia or New Zealand), ACCA graduates do not need to sit for professional exams to qualify for MIA recognition.

“This is because ACCA is one of the 10 overseas accounting bodies that is fully accredited by the MIA”, Lim said.

To be eligible to enroll for CAT at Sunway, students must obtain a minimum of 5 credits in SPM, including in English and Mathematics. The next CAT intake at Kolej Sunway Kuching will commence on 25 September, 2017.
