MARUDI: The swiftlet nest industry can be a catalyst to raise the income of the people in Marudi constituency.
Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil said this is due to the presence of bird nest operators who come from other areas such as Bintulu, Sibu, Kuching, Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia to Marudi.
“Their presence can promote the district to the outside community.
“In the meantime, I propose the establishment of a Sarawak Swiftlet Association to facilitate matters related to the marketing of swiftlet nests to Peninsular Malaysia and also internationally,” he was quoted as saying in a news report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS).
The fifth anniversary ceremony of the Baram Swiftlet and Agriculture Association held recently also saw Penguang announced an allocation of RM10,000 to the association.
Also donating to the association were the Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala amounting to RM10,000 while Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau donated RM5,000.
For the record, the number of members registered with the Baram Swiftlet and Agriculture Association has now reached 203 individuals.
