KUCHING: Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus (Swinburne Sarawak) is set to make history with its inaugural participation in the prestigious Shell Eco-Marathon 2024, marking a significant leap towards environmental sustainability and pioneering engineering.

The Shell Eco-Marathon, an annual competition, serves as a global platform for student teams to innovate, construct, and race energy-efficient vehicles.

Swinburne Sarawak’s diverse team, representing disciplines such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering, Design, and Business, underscores the university’s commitment to fostering innovative and sustainable solutions.

The team’s focus lies on participating in the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia-Pacific and the Middle East 2024, scheduled for July 2 to 7, 2024, at Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit, Lombok, Indonesia.

Swinburne Sarawak aims to design and construct cutting-edge hydrogen and electric prototypes, pushing the boundaries of eco-conscious engineering.

A crucial milestone was reached on June 27, 2023, when the team unveiled their design prototypes to key sponsors, showcasing their dedication and providing a glimpse into the future of sustainable transportation.

The team’s academic zenith on July 24 involved hosting Professor William D Rieken from Okayama University, focusing on rotational detonation rocket engines, opening avenues of knowledge and innovation.

One notable development is the generous backing from Solarvest, a significant achievement for the team.

This financial support, culminating in a Memorandum of Understanding signed on Aug 9, 2023, between Solarvest Borneo, Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS), and Swinburne Sarawak, aims to create a cutting-edge hydrogen and electric prototype race car for the upcoming competition.

Joseph Koh, overseeing the project and an experienced participant in the Eco-Marathon, aims to drive innovation in the automotive industry, with potential applications in the broader market.

This collaboration, supported by Solarvest, CENTEXS, and Swinburne Sarawak, not only advances the team’s mission but also equips local students with essential skills for success in Malaysia’s growing renewable energy sector.

This partnership is a promising initiative with significant implications for Sarawak痴 renewable energy and hydrogen mobility am
