SIBU: The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture has received complaints from foreign tourists that they are only taken to one or two tourist destinations before being taken to shopping places in the country.

Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said due to this, foreign tourists feel deceived by the promotional videos of travel agencies that show many interesting destinations to visit in Malaysia.

Hence, he has ordered that a circular regarding this matter be issued soon to guide travel companies or agencies.

“The circular will later limit shopping activities, instead multiply and list interesting and historic tourist destinations in the itinerary of foreign tourists to Malaysia.

“Many foreign tourists are eager to visit tourist spots seen in advertisements,” he said in his Facebook posting yesterday (Feb 11).

However, he stressed that the circular does not mean that foreign tourists are banned from visiting shopping areas.

“It’s just that it is expected to be reduced to meet the demands of most foreign tourists. They can still shop in Malaysia while they are here,” he said.

Tiong who is Bintulu MP noted that the ministry will also list shopping centres on the its official website for tourists’ reference.

He also said that the ministry is currently working on a mobile application that can be used to find shopping centres, restaurants, entertainment, and leisure places near their accommodation.

The ministry will also meet with travel agencies to gain a deeper understanding and discuss matters related to the planning of travel schedules for foreign tourists to Malaysia.

“Once again it is emphasised that the travel activities of foreign tourists visiting Malaysia must meet their demands to enjoy a sweet experience while in this country.

“The ministry will continue to monitor and get views from all parties including travel agencies and foreign tourists from time to time,” he said.
