BINTULU: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said negotiations to take over Bintulu Port are in progress and that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is aware of it.

“God willing, it can be implemented and I have reported to the Prime Minister that under the Sarawak Constitution, the port is under the jurisdiction of Sarawak. There should be no discrimination in terms of port dues

“Sarawak intends to integrate all its ports. Therefore, Bintulu Port should be returned to Sarawak,” he said.

Abang Johari said this at the Majlis Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri held at Kampung Warisan Jepak Community Hall here yesterday.

In other developments, the Minister of Finance and New Economy said the state received two investments for the production of sour gas in Bintulu, in which Abang Johari said it will add value to the resources available here.

According to him, the two companies are Sarawak Shell Berhad and PTTEP HK Offshore Limited and each has invested RM4 billion in Bintulu.

“We received two large investments. One of them is Shell, which will produce sour gas. We have a new technology which is carbon and when formed together (with sour gas), it produce gas which becomes a material for petrochemicals.

“Shell invested RM4 billion in Bintulu and a Thai oil company, PTTEP also invested RM4 billion,” he added.

Last year, the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas), Sarawak Shell Berhad and PTTEP HK Offshore Limited had signed a heads of agreement (HoA) to build an onshore plan complex within the Petchem Industrial Park in Tanjong Kidurong, Bintulu.

The complex forms part of the Sarawak Integrated Sour Gas Evacuation System (SISGES) project.
