Teacher loses over RM16k to food delivery scam

SIBU: A teacher was lured by what appeared to be an enticing food delivery offer, only to find herself trapped in a nightmare after she unknowingly lost RM16,764 to scammers.

Sibu District police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said that the 40-year-old victim filed a report on March 8, claiming she had been scammed.

“The woman was attracted by an advertisement on Facebook regarding food ordering and delivery on March 7. She clicked on the link to contact the suspect, who introduced himself as Alex on the WhatsApp application,” he said in a statement today (Mar 9).

The suspect informed her that a 20-day food order package would cost RM170, with an additional RM100 deposit for the food containers.

Without any suspicion, the victim agreed and made a payment of RM270 into an account number provided by the suspect.

“After making the payment, she received a message from a man known as Lee, who asked her to download the H&Y Delivery app through the provided link.

She then entered her personal information and registered using her credit card to pay RM1 for new member registration,” he added.

However, Zulkipli said, the next day, she received several messages asking for her OTP number, which she provided.

“Upon checking her bank, she found out that her credit card had been debited RM16,494.30 for Bigpay payments,” he added.

Realising she had been deceived, she came forward to lodge a police report.

The case is currently under investigation under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which covers cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property.
