SIMUNJAN: Telecommunications towers will be equipped with the latest transmitter equipment known as the Multi-Operator Core Network (MOCN) for greater efficiency, said Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi.

He said his ministry through the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) will start installing the equipment on towers that have yet to have the network.

The move is part of efforts to ensure that telcos use only one set of transmitting equipment to provide services to users.

MOCN is a resource efficient solution as it gives the mobile operators the opportunity to pool their respective spectrum allocations, resulting in improved trunking efficiency.

“Installing telecommunications equipment takes time, and it will take some time for the people to be able to enjoy internet coverage.

“SDEC will instal equipment that will enable all telecommunications companies to be able to use MOCN,” he said during a working visit to Kampung Selangking Simunjan, yesterday.

He added that although the provision of telecommunications infrastructure is under the responsibility of the federal government, the Sarawak government has allocated RM1.8 billion to upgrade telecommunications facilities, especially in the rural areas.

“This is not an excuse but the Sarawak government is still trying equip telecommunications towers with the latest technological infrastructure,” he said.
