KUCHING: Telling a story that attracts the interest of readers is a crucial factor to creating a journalist’s own brand and identity.
Sarawak Media Group (SMG) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Suhaimi Sulaiman said journalists should not ignore the basic principles of journalism and credibility.

“It is one of the main challenges for today’s journalists in facing the challenges from the changing news industry to remain relevant in the digital age.

“ A journalist should also be a storyteller, that is, write news with colourful and beautiful storytelling.

“How do journalists create their own brand? The writing produced must be equipped with trust, credibility, news that can and always be used, inspiring, fast and accurate.

“While to succeed, we must be ourselves at the same time more creative in creating opportunities and self-worth,” he said in his talk on Pushing Boundaries and Staying Relevant in the Changing Media Industry during the workshop organised by New Sarawak Tribune and Suara Sarawak and held at the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) hall here on Wednesday.

He also reminded the journalists not to get stuck with only the tried and tested approaches to writing.

“You have to think like an entrepreneur who is good at finding differences in writing that have an impact on attracting readers,” he said.

He added for a task that is not their area of interest, they still have to face and complete it.

“At the same time, you have to sacrifice some time by writing news that you are interested in.

“This is important because to succeed, we have to challenge ourselves to get the best results in our career.

Make sure you are special, always be the main choice and produce the best work with a high spirit of competition,” he added.
