If you suffer from motion sickness, look away now: Carnival Cruise Line has announced the launch of a new ship in 2020 that will have a rollercoaster on board – the first of its kind.

The Mardi Gras – named after the company’s first ever cruise liner, the TSS Mardi Gras, which was launched in 1972 – will have a two-seat rollercoaster that can reach a top speed of 64 kilometres per hour. The BOLT Ultimate Sea Coaster will be the world’s first rollercoaster on board a ship.

The ship will also be the “greenest cruise ship in North America,” according to the Carnival Cruise Line website. This is because it will be powered by clean-burning liquefied natural gas (LNG) – most other cruise ships are huge polluters that use heavy fuels such as diesel.

The Mardi Gras will be launched in autumn 2020 and will have capacity for up to 5,200 passengers. It is currently being built in the Finnish port of Turku.
