KUCHING: Two men, who caused grievous hurt to another, were each sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment and given three strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here.

Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman meted out the sentences against 23-year-old Kuan Boon Lung and 26-year-old Larrie Liew Yu Nan on Tuesday (April 11).

Both pleaded guilty to a charge framed under Section 326 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same Code.

If convicted, the Section provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine or caning.

According to the facts of the case, the duo committed the offence at the 27-year-old victim’s house in Bau around 10am on March 25 this year.

At the time of the incident, the victim was asleep in the living room. The duo showed up and beat the victim with a rattan cane and wooden club.

The victim, who sustained head injuries and a fractured left hand, was later taken to Bau Hospital for treatment.

The victim informed the doctor treating him that he had been assaulted. This prompted the doctor to lodge a police report around 10.30pm on the same day.

It was believed that the assault stemmed from a dispute between the victim and the duo.

The police arrested Kuan on March 27 and Liew on March 28, and seized the cane and club used in the assault.

Deputy public prosecutor Iezzah Iburdanisha Ibrahim prosecuted the case while Kuan and Liew were unrepresented.
