KUCHING: One of two American tourists who were hit by a car as they crossed the road yesterday has died.

State Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said the tourist, who succumbed to his injuries, was identified as 62-year-old Mark Sigmund.

Mark was pronounced dead at 1.54am while receiving treatment at the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) due to severe head injuries.

Mark and his wife, Tabia Jannie Ekulora, 48, were crossing the road at Jalan Padungan nearby a petrol station at about 1am, when they were struck by a multipurpose vehicle (MPV).

Paramedics were summoned to the scene and found the couple had sustained severe injuries. The victims were then rushed to the hospital.

Tabia remains hospitalised and is in a stable condition. She suffered a fractured right thumb and has been transferred to a private hospital.

The driver, a 26-year-old man, was unharmed during the incident.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
