KUCHING: Some members of Malaysia Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta), Sarawak Chapter have yet to renew their memberships and licences since the Covid-19 pandemic struck.

“There are currently 10 per cent fewer members. Instead of closing shop, they have not renewed their memberships,” chairman Oscar Choo shared.

“Moving forward, this is why we are initiating this Matta fair.

“It will not just promote the destinations and travel packages but also help our members out. We are trying to help them and at least, kickstart their business.”

He also noted that the fair was expected to foster and enhance networking, goodwill and fellowship among the travel agents who have not seen each other for over two years,” he explained during a press conference here on Monday (July 4).

When asked whether or not members would permanently close shop, he only said: “We are not sure whether or not they have renewed their licences. And we also do not know what their next move will be.”

“Because the problem we currently have in our country is manpower,” Choo added.

There are currently 121 members of Sarawak Matta for inbound and outbound tourism, and it is an association that offers some sort of platform for members to promote their tour packages to travellers.
