KUCHING: Aspiring leaders came together to share their hopes and goal for a better Sarawak during a leadership programme held by The Sarawak Initiatives here recently

During the one-day programme, they discussed various topics covering economics and youth development including education as well as participation in politics.

TSI Chairman Datuk John Tenewi said it was a good opportunity to let aspiring leaders come forward.

He emphasised the need to produce great leaders for the future of Sarawak with TSI providing the platform and mentorship to groom them.

“In our borderless world today, where many countries and their people are making great progress, we in Sarawak need good leaders to take us through this 21st century.

“Sarawakians do not wish to be left behind in this fast moving globalised world,” he said during the programme which took place at a local hotel here on Saturday (July 23).

John reminded that good leaders must exhibit strong characteristics, where they have a clear vision and long-term ideas on what needs to be done, with solid commitment to realising their goals.

Good leaders, he said, must be competent and honest, with zero tolerance for corruption, operating within the rule of law and not according to their caprices.

He added that good leaders must be able to build and command a competent, honest and cooperative team.

A leader must work for the interest of the people and organisation that they lead, and not for their own interests.

“Bright leaders can only emerge when we have a good education system throughout the process of nation building.

“It is therefore the first main objective of TSI to ensure Sarawak pursues a high level and standard of education.

“The world is changing at lightning speed especially in the fields of science, technology, communication and commerce.

“We will be further left behind if we do not adapt to the rapid changes that are taking place,” said John.

The programme, which involved some 600 registered participants, was delivered by prominent lecturers, covering 26 lectures on a wide array of topics.
