KUCHING: Two friends pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here on Tuesday (April 26) on charges of committing gang robbery.

Mohd Nazeem Mohd Zailani, 31, and Muhamad Fairud Mezeri, 32, claimed trial after a charge was read out jointly before judge Maris Agan.

According to the charges, the accused snatched a 51-year-old woman’s handbag at a petrol station in Jalan Padungan here at about 3.20pm on April 18.

The accused were charged under Section 395 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to 20 years and whipping, if found guilty.

During the mention of the case, deputy public prosecutor Md Syafique Md Hilmie did not offer bail on account of preventing them from repeating the same offence as well as to prevent them from fleeing.

However, lawyer Abdul Rahman Mohd Hazmi, who represented Mohd Nazeem, applied for him to be released on bail as the accused had to work to support his wife and two children.
