KUCHING: Two construction workers were crushed to death by a crane in a freak accident at a construction site at Jalan Capital Garden, Taman Capital Tanjung Tuang, Kota Samarahan last Friday afternoon.

The two workers were identified as Muhammad Bake, 49, from Kampung Melayu in Kota Samarahan and Helen Suma Gilbert from Moyan Lidang, Asajaya.

According to a spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the crane which was in operation suddenly tilted over and its boom fell on both victims.

They were pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

The spokesman said nine firefighters in a fire engine and EMRS vehicle from Kota Samarahan fire station were dispatched to the scene after they received a distress call from the Sarawak General Hospital informing them on the accident at 3.55pm.

Upon arrival at the site at 4.11pm, the firefighters were told that the body of a woman was still trapped under the boom of the crane.

Two back hoes were used to extricate the body.

Police and Civil Defence Force (APM) personnel were also at the scene.
