SIBU: Sarawak Innovation and Technology Exhibition (SAINTEX’ 18) will be held from August 9 – 11 at University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS) here while STEM Playground takes place from August 11 – 12 at the same venue. UCTS Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Sabarudin Mohd said SAINTEX’ 18 aimed to encourage creative inventions and innovations among students and youths.

“It is also a platform to showcase and contribute ideas and innovations or knowledge in technology while demonstrating their ability to create or discover something new.”

“This competition will be one of the flagships for UCTS in championing the advancement of technological invention in Malaysia and the world in the future,” he told a press conference held at UCTS yesterday.

SAINTEX’ 18 and STEM Playground are co-organised with Tabung Gagasan Anak Bumiputera Sarawak (TEGAS), Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Research (MESTR), Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) and Sarawak Foundation.

Dr Sabarudin explained that the STEM Playground activities would allow the participants to engage in the exciting hands-on STEM workshop and have fun. He pointed out that the competition was divided into three categories, namely, “The Product” category which was open to all including the international participants, “The Grassroots Community” category which was open to local investors and “The STEM” competition for schools.

Dr Sabarudin said the fee for “The Product (open) category was RM400 while the fee for “The Grassroots Community” category was RM300. On the prizes for “The Product” category, he revealed that the Gold Medal winner would receive RM5,000 plus a medal and a certificate while the Silver Medal winner would go home with RM3,000 plus a medal and a certificate.

Meanwhile, the Bronze Medal winner will receive RM1,500 plus a medal and a certificate. For the “The Gra s s root s Community” category, the Gold Medal winner will receive RM3,000 while the Silver Medal winner will go home with RM1,000 and the Bronze Medal winner will receive RM1,000. All the winners will also receive medals and certificates. The champions of the Young Inventor category and Junior Inventor category will receive RM500 each while the second place winner will go home with RM300 each for both categories. The third place winner will receive RM100. All the winners will receive medals and certificates.
