UM, SMK USJ12 top innovators contest

MUKAH: Universiti Malaya (UM) and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) USJ12, Selangor won the Best Innovation Award and Best Young Innovation Award respectively at the International Borneo Innovation Exhibtion and Competition (IBIEC) 2021 held virtually at Politeknik Mukah (PMU) here recently.

UM’s winning project was entitled Near-IR Fibre Laser based on aluminised optic film player, while SMK USJ12 invention was entitled Cadog Food Container. They received RM200 and e-Certificate of Achievement each.

UM also won RM500 and an e-Certificate of Achievement for emerging champion in the competition. The first runner-up and second runner-up in each category received RM400 and RM300 respectively.

Themed “Industrial Revolution (IR) 4.0 Innovation: Embracing the New Normal”, the one-day event featured 123 innovation projects in seven categories namely, Construction & Materials, Persekitaran Buatan & Interior Design (Category 1); Machine Process, Equipment & Manufacturing (C2); ICT & Multimedia (C3); Electric, Electronic and Telecommunications (C4); Green Products, Agriculture, Environment & Renewable Energy (C5); Teaching & Learning (C6); Social Science & Entrepreneurship (C7).

IBIEC 2021 serves as a platform to provide opportunity to inventors and innovators to present and exhibit their creative and innovative ideas at a higher level.

Politeknik Negeri Sriwijaya Indonesia deputy director, Zakaria M Pd, who represented the director, said IBIEC 2021 has to be held virtually due to Covid-19 and living in a new normal.

“I believed this would motivate us to strive towards added value in science and technological innovation,” he said when closing the event.

He added IBIEC would serve as as important plaftform to present the outcome of researches comprising new breakthroughs, which would be beneficial to the academic community, industrial bodies, employers, related agencies, students and the public.

IBIEC 2021 was jointly organised by Polytechnic Negeri Sriwijaya Indonesia, Department of Polytechnic & Community College Education, Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, Politeknik Mukah Sarawak, Politeknik Caltex Riau Indonesia, Politeknik Jambi Indonesia and IANA Miricle Training & Consultancy Centre Sdn Bhd.
