KUCHING: The Sentuhan Kasih Kuching Community-based Rehabilitation Centre (PDK) has held its open day to allow parents to understand and learn more about the activities and therapy that can be carried out for children with disabilities.

The half-day open day from 8 am to 2 pm was held at the centre’s premises located at Jalan Ridgeway, Off Jalan Ong Tiang Swee here yesterday.

It was a fun-filled activity where parents also get to join their children in participating in colouring activities, bead necklace making.

The centre’s chairman Jamey Ngedat said the main objective of organising the open day was to expose to the public on the facilities as well programmes available at the centre.

“Normally, parents will come and just drop their children at the centre and when the sessions finish, parents will take them home.

“Through the open day like this, parents can have a better understanding of what the programmes or therapy are carried out for the students here.

“At the same time, we hope once parents have a better exposure, then they can apply the related therapy for their children at home,” he said.

He said this when speaking at the opening ceremony of the open day which was also attended by social welfare officer of the Social Welfare Department Kuching Division, Norhayati Abdul Rahman.

Jamey added that, among others, there are early intervention programmes as well as relevant therapy available for the children with disabilities at the centre.

On another note, he said the centre will try to get more grants from the relevant authorities in order to be able to take in more staff so that it could cater for the needs of the special needs students.
