KUCHING: Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching Xing Weiping honoured the memory of over a hundred Chinese overseas workers from Sarawak who made the ultimate sacrifice in the fight against Japanese occupation during World War 2.

The solemn ceremony, held at the Sarawak War Memorial as part of the Qingming Festival, was attended by Kuching South City Council mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng and Padawan Municipal Council chairman Tan Kai.

It served as a moment of remembrance and reverence for the courage and sacrifice of the unsung heroes.

Xing, in his address at the ceremony, highlighted the pivotal role played by these Chinese overseas workers during the Sino-Japanese War.

“After the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War, overseas Chinese in Nanyang responded to the call of the patriotic leader Tan Kah Kee, who actively rushed to the frontlines of the anti-Japanese resistance.

“Among them, over a hundred Chinese overseas workers from Sarawak gave their lives in the struggle against Japan to save their country.

“Today, we gather here to remember these martyrs, to learn from and uphold their unwavering patriotism, their spirit of fearlessness in the face of danger, and their readiness to sacrifice, further uniting Chinese people at home and abroad in our shared pursuit of national rejuvenation,” he said.

During the ceremony, Xing and delegates also laid wreaths at the monument, and all present bowed in silence to express sorrow for the martyrs.
